Donald, also Golfer of the Year on the European Tour

If a few days ago he was elected Golfer of the Year of the North American Tour, now Luke Donald has been named best player of the year of the European Tour. The English player, world number one and number one of the two most important circuits in the world, which has made him the first player to win the Order of Merit on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, crowns a dream season.

“I think the way I won the two money lists was the most comforting thing about the season,” Donald said. “Going to Florida and winning the Disney Classic (tournament) in October when I had to (to lead the U.S. tour money list) was very important because it gave me the incentive to succeed in Dubai,” he added.

Donald, who is competing in the Australian Masters this week, finished third at the Dubai World Championship last Sunday and thus also secured the top spot on the European Tour money list. The 34-year-old Englishman won the European Order of Merit despite having played six fewer tournaments than the next highest-ranked player, Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, this year’s U.S. Open champion. The panel of judges that chooses the winner of the ‘Golfer of the Year’ award includes journalists from newspapers and specialized magazines, as well as radio and television commentators.
