Europe makes history by winning its third consecutive Solheim Cup

Europe, as defending champion and with a draw (14-14), retained the Solheim Cup in an extraordinary final against the United States at Finca Cortesin. This victory means that for the first time Europe has won three titles in a row in this biennial competition.
Prior to this, the 18th edition of the tournament, the overall score was 10-7 in favor of the United States. Since the Solheim Cup began in 1990, Europe had never won three straight competitions. The U.S. team won three titles in a row in 1994, 1996 and 1998 and again in 2005, 2007 and 2009.

Starting the day tied 8-8 after two days of foursomes and fourballs, it all came down to an exciting last day of singles and the teams tied matches with six points each. The title was decided in the final matches, which featured Carlota Ciganda and Sweden’s Caroline Hedwall.

The Spanish star holed the putt to win her match and get the fourteenth point needed to retain the Cup. It remained to finish the duel between Lexie Thompson and Emily Perdensen, who lost the European, but the point at stake was no longer important, as Europe had already reached the decisive 14th point thanks to Ciganda. The player from Navarre was undoubtedly the great protagonist with an extraordinary game, evidenced by the four points she scored for her team during the three days of competition.
For her part, Hedwall was the other player who gave Europe wings thanks to her fantastic comeback and her thrilling finish. Three down after the 12th, she turned the match around, winning five of the last six holes in her match against Ally Ewing.

Speaking to Sky Sports, European captain Suzann Pettersen said, “I think the tears have gone. I think it was meant to be: Carlota holed the winning putt in Spain. Hedwall played her part. It all came down to the last moment.
Pettersen added: “Tonight there will be a big party.” When asked how he would celebrate, he added, “The Spanish way.”
The presence of King Felipe at the closing ceremony further enhanced one of the most important sporting events in the world.
