European Tour backs ban on anchored putters

The European Tour has confirmed its support for the R&A and the USGA and its proposal for Rule 14-1b, the prohibition of anchoring the putter to the body when executing a stroke under the Rules of Golf. George O’Grady, Chief Executive of the European Tour, said: “The European Tour has been fully involved in the consultation process that concluded on February 28 and we deeply value this participation. Our members support the unique role that governing bodies play in the formulation of the Rules of Golf.”

“In addition, virtually our entire Tournament Committee and player representatives support the proposed rule even though they are aware and have taken into account the fact that some of our members and especially our older members use the anchor method.”

“We understand the points proposed by the PGA Tour and the PGA of America and we respect and agree with their views, which are based on previous experience and evidence, having expressed great concern about the game. The whole issue has received much more attention in the United States than in the rest of the world, perhaps because of the number of their players using the anchor method, and the general condition of their golf courses, with firm and fast greens.”
