Women’s golf has been in the spotlight during this week of professional tours, as the last major of the season, the AIG Women’s Open, has been played at the Old Course in St. Andrews (Scotland) with the best players in the world in contention.
Among them, six Spaniards started the tournament, of which Carlota Ciganda, Nuria Iturrioz, Marta Martín and amateur Julia López made the cut, while María Hernández and Ana Peláez had to pack their bags earlier than expected.
Then, after the conclusion of the tournament, the big news for Spanish golf has been in the figure of Julia Lopez, current number two in the world amateur ranking, as the Andalusian player has been the best placed Spanish player, finishing in 29th place.
Julia Lopez, despite her amateur status, has shown her great skill in front of an important group of players and has signed her best card in the last round, with 71 strokes (-1), for a total of 291 (+3).
The victory, after an exciting day with continuous changes in the lead, went to Lydia Ko. With this victory, the New Zealand player has scored her third Grand Slam tournament and completes a dream month after the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Paris 2024.
