Textile racism? What happened in an English golf club is a joke: a visiting golfer could not play because he was wearing black socks and was told that he could only go out on the course with white socks. Unbelievable but true.
The injured gentleman’s name is David Cole and the location of the “event” is Letchworth Golf Club in Hertfordshire (UK). It was there that a club employee told him that he would not be allowed to play with the black socks he was wearing. The fact is that the club’s dress code requires the garment to be white, but the issue is that, according to Cole, he was not given the opportunity to go shopping or look for others in that color but was directly rejected to play.
The general manager of the golf club replied via twitter to another who had written Cole: “I’m sure you should have been asked to change them instead of being turned away, and if you weren’t I express my apologies.”
The player replied in turn with this twit: “Unfortunately I don’t wear spare socks, but I was told I could pay £7.50 (€8.3) for some non-sport long socks from your golf store in addition to my green fee (£60, about €67). I didn’t want to do that. I would love to know what the real reason for the white socks rule is.”
Dress codes in golf are nothing new and are often the subject of debate. ThePGA Tour requires its players to wear long pants even in sweltering conditions and the LPGA Tour has received criticism from some of its stars. by a stricter dress code that came into effect in 2017. It is not uncommon for private clubs or even public fields to require collared polo shirts and ban garments such as jeans, but the white socks thing is something that was not in the news until now.
