High level of play at the Andalusian International Championships

The excitement for the outcome and the high level of play exhibited have been two of the characteristics of the International Singles and Doubles Championships of Andalusia, which have been played at the Parador Malaga Golf course for two days.

The couples Laura Gómez-Isabel Bascuas y Miguel Ángel Jiménez-Borja Cabello have won the International Doubles Championship of Andalusia 2013 The excitement presided over the second and final day, played under the Fourball modality. In fact, in the women’s category, the winners beat the runners-up by only one stroke, while in the men’s category it was necessary to play a play-off playoff.

As for the women, Isabel Bascuas and Laura Gómez were leaders at the end of the opening round, played according to the Foursome format, after submitting a card of 74 strokes (+2). Already in the final round, the duo signed a good round of 69 strokes (-3), with three decisive birdies on holes 15, 16 and 17, and was one stroke ahead of the tandem formed by Maria Parra and Sara Garcia, authors of a spectacular second round of 65 strokes (-7) that made them dream at times with the victory.

Regarding the men’s category, the under par results of several couples were close to excellence. Thus, Pablo Heredia and Gonzalo Leal with 64 strokes (-8) or the 66 strokes (-6) of Carlos Segura and Angel Hidalgo, excelled in a last round where we witnessed a real recital of the duo composed by Miguel Angel Jimenez and Borja Cabello.

The couple from Malaga eclipsed the rest of the participants after signing a stratospheric round of 62 strokes (-10), in a dream card with eight birdies, an eagle and no bogey.

Thanks to this masterful record, Borja Cabello and Miguel Ángel Jiménez tied at 138 cumulative strokes with the first day’s leaders, Casto Gómez and Antonio Cruz-Conde.

Thus, both pairs had to play a play-off, which could have been even more numerous if the Enrique Marín-Calvin John Greschner duo had holed their last putt on the 18th green.

Already in the playoff, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Borja Cabello consummated the comeback and in the first hole overcame Antonio Cruz-Conde and Casto Gomez to proclaim themselves new Andalusian Doubles champions.

EXHIBITION OF MARIA PARRA

As regards the International Men’s and Women’s Individual Championship of Andalusia, the winners were Antonio Cruz-Conde Rodríguez-Guerra and María Parra Luque. This edition will be remembered for the exhibition of the game of María Parra, new champion of Andalusia with an anthological record of 133 strokes (-11).

The young golfer from Cadiz practically sentenced the tournament in the opening round after delivering a superb round of 65 strokes (-7), clean of errors and edged with seven birdies.

On the second and final day, María Parra, far from being relieved by her comfortable lead at the top of the leaderboard, returned to her strengths and with a magnificent card of 68 strokes (-4) put even more ground to make up on her main rivals.

The runner-up, ten strokes behind the winner, was Ana Peláez Triviño, who snatched second place from Rocío Sánchez Lobato with a final round under par (71 strokes).

In the 2nd women’s category, María Contreras Luna took advantage of the handicap difference to beat Blanca Hermana Salcedo after both finished equal at 160 strokes.

On the other hand, in the men’s competition, Pablo Rodríguez-Tabernero Torres slept as leader at the end of the first 18 holes thanks to a score of 71 strokes.

However, on the decisive day, Antonio Cruz-Conde stood out with an excellent round of 69 strokes and 141 to the total (-3), which took him to the title in the absolute category.

Next, Enrique Marín Santander moved up several places to finish second with a cumulative 144 strokes (par).

In the 2nd men’s category, as in the women’s event, it was necessary to resort to the handicap difference to award the victory to Jesús Garrido Jiménez and relegate Guillermo Elías Moreno Piña to second place.

In addition, in 3rd category, Emmanuel Garzón Hinojo was the winner with a wide margin of seven strokes over Nial Naughton and Francisco Pulido Cano.

The awards ceremony, held in the Albatros room of the Parador Malaga Golf, was attended by, among others, Maria Pilar van Dulken, President of the Management Committee of the Royal Andalusian Golf Federation; Manuel Garvayo, Acting President of the RFGA Men’s Committee; Indalecio Ballesta, Secretary of the Parador Malaga Golf; and Diego Molina, Chief Referee of the championship.
