Juan Postigo has retained the title in the Spanish Adapted Golf Championship, which held its sixth edition at the Río Real course in Malaga. It was not easy for the Cantabrian champion, who had to defend his crown in a play-off after Antonio Llerena, another champion with experience in this championship, bravely disputed the event.
Antonio Llerena, from Castellón, was the leader after a sensational round of 75 strokes, and had a two-stroke lead over Juan Postigo. In Sunday’s round the leader could not keep the same pace and with 80 strokes he was overtaken by Juan Postigo, who also did not improve his 77 strokes of Saturday but with 78 could reach the lead.
With equality in the scoreboard, both players went out to a play off that finally went to Juan Postigo, last year’s winner who maintains his dominance in this event. For his part, Antonio Llerena aspired to reedit the triumphs achieved in 2012 and 2013.
Juan Postigo and Antonio Llerena (both in the picture, with the champion in white) have established an almost exclusive mano a mano, since the third classified, Felipe Antonio Herranz from Madrid, finished in the clubhouse with a card of 166 strokes, nine more than the leaders, after two rounds of 84 and 82 strokes.
Simultaneously, the Spanish Adapted Golf Cup, reserved for golfers with handicaps equal to or higher than 18.4, was held, in this case under the Stableford modality, also over 36 holes.
After the first round, the Catalan Enrique Ramirez dominated with 32 points, followed closely by Jose Martinez and Jorge Rosillo from Madrid, with 31 and 29, respectively. In the second round, Enrique Ramirez confirmed his victory with another 32 points for a total of 64, followed by Jose Martinez, with 62, repeating the 31 points of Saturday, and David Jimenez who with 62 points has climbed to second place with 36 points.
A total of 28 players from different parts of the country -twelve in the Spanish Championship and sixteen in the Spanish Cup- took part in the tournament.
As in the five previous editions, held at the National Golf Center, Villaitana, Palomarejos, Foressos and Villamayor, the test has been specifically sponsored by the Adapted Golf Committee of the RFEG to give more opportunities to access this sport to people with different disabilities.
Six years after Xavi Rubio’s triumph
In the inaugural edition of this Spanish Adapted Golf Championship, in 2010, Francisco Javier Rubio won. In 2011, in Villaitana, Francisco Centeno succeeded him in a list of winners completed by Antonio Llerena with his two victories and Juan Postigo.
This Championship is played in accordance with the Rules established by the EDGA (European Disabled Golf Association) and following the “Modifications to the Rules of Golf for Disabled Players” edited by the Rules Committee of the RFEG and approved by R&A Limited.
