McIlroy plants tennis player Wozniacki before wedding

“The problem is mine.” A dejected Rory McIlroy acknowledged that he will find it difficult to focus on golf this week at the BMW PGA after calling off his engagement with tennis player Caroline Wozniacki yesterday.

Just a few days after sending out the wedding invitations, the 25-year-old Northern Irish golfer, two years younger than his now ex-girlfriend, said he is not ready for marriage. “There is no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two people,” said the athlete in a statement on the eve of the championship, which is held in Wentworth.

“The problem is mine. Sending out the invitations over the weekend made me realize that I was not prepared for all that marriage entails. I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we have had together.”

The couple, known as ‘Wozilroy’ (‘Brangelina’ style) to their fans, announced their engagement last January via Twitter, after McIlroy proposed to his girlfriend following the New Year’s Eve fires in Sydney.

The world number 10, clearly dismayed, assured a press conference on Wednesday that he had not considered withdrawing from the championship. “I’m not going to lie. It’s going to be really tough, but I’m going to have to focus on what I have on my hands. I made a commitment to be here and I thought it was my obligation to play in this event,” added McIlroy, who had been in a relationship with Wozniacki for two and a half years.

“Obviously, it’s a pretty difficult time for Caroline and I and I think the statement really said it all this morning. It was mutual and we both thought it was the best thing for both of us.”

“It’s time to move on and I think I’ve said all I have to say. I just want to focus on golf and the tournament.”
