Nelly Korda has claimed her first LPGA Tour Player of the Year award as it was mathematically impossible to catch her in the points competition.
Korda had to skip two tournaments during the Asian tour due to a minor neck injury that limited her training. Japan’s Ayaka Furue would have had to win the remaining LPGA Tour events to catch Korda. Furue finished 10th at the Toto Japan Classic.
Korda has won six times this year, including a major. Earlier this season she won five consecutive tournaments, tying the LPGA Tour record.
It is the second consecutive year an American player has won the LPGA Tour’s biggest prize. Lilia Vu won the award in 2023 thanks to her two majors. The last time an American won the LPGA Tour’s Player of the Year award in successive years was Betsy King in 1993 and Beth Daniel in 1994.
Korda, the No. 1 player in the women’s world rankings, still has two tournaments left to try to win the Race to CME Globe, which is decided in the season finale Nov. 21-24.
