Sung Hyun Park’s reign at the top of the women’s world golf rankings has been short-lived. Just one week after the South Korean became the first LPGA Tour rookie to reach number one, China’s Shanshan Feng won the Blue Bay LPGA (her second consecutive Women’s Tour victory) to overtake her in the world rankings.
The victory at the Jian Lake Blue Bay course on China’s Hainan Island allowed him to become the first golfer (male or female) from China to rise to the top of the world golf rankings.
“I’m very, very excited and very proud of myself and I think it’s special because I won this tournament to become world number one. I finished first in China, so I got the world number one in front of my home crowd. I am very happy about that and I hope all the Chinese are watching me and can play golf. Hopefully there will be more Chinese people participating on the tours and more world number ones coming from China. I just want 2017 to never end, an endless 2017 would be great.”
Feng (28) is the 12th player to top the world rankings since its launch in 2006. The number ones so far have represented nine nationalities. Annika Sorenstam (Sweden) was the first player to reach the number in the world rankings, followed (for varying periods) by Lorena Ochoa (Mexico), Shin, Ai Miyazato (Japan), Cristie Kerr (USA), Yani Tseng (Taiwan), Stacy Lewis (USA), Inbee Park (South Korea), Lydia Ko (New Zealand), Ariya Jutanugarn (Thailand), So Yeon Ryu (South Koraa) and Sung Hyun Park.
