Paul Lawrie won the Qatar Masters, part of the European Tour, held in Doha, with a card of 201 strokes (-15), while Sergio Garcia finished in fifth position, 7 strokes behind the winner. With his victory in the Qatari tournament, the Scottish player achieved the seventh victory of his career in the European Tour and returned to the ‘Top 50’ in the world ranking for the first time since 2003. This victory also guarantees him a place in the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play, to be held in Arizona, and another in the Volvo World Match Play Championship, to be held in Spain in May, specifically at the Finca Cortesín golf course in Costa del Sol.
For his part, Spaniard Sergio Garcia remained at six under par through the first 11 holes, but two bogeys on the 13th and 15th dropped him to fifth place. The tournament had to be shortened to 54 holes due to the strong wind.
Lawrie was thrilled with the win, his first since his former coach, Adam Hunter, died of leukemia in October. “I don’t think I could play any better, I’ve been doing well for a long time,” he said.
The Scotsman made no mistakes in the last round, made 5 birdies and even made an eagle on the 9th hole that put him on the way to a quiet triumph. With this title, Lawrie added his second Qatar Masters, as in 1999 he also won the tournament and joined Adam Scott as the only players to have won twice the glory in Doha.
