It is only a matter of time, and it seems that it will be a short time before Jon Rahm becomes number one in the world. At the moment, he already occupies the second place in the ranking after his superb performance in the WGC Mexico Championship held at the Chapultepec Club in Mexico City, where he finished third.
If Rahm had won, which is what looked like it was going to happen especially with his spectacular start on Sunday (four birdies in the first five holes), and Rory McIlroy had finished fifth, which he did, the Biscayan would have dispossessed the Northern Irishman of the world throne.
But the Basque’s second round was not so spectacular and, with two birdies and two bogeys, he could not catch up with the American Patrick Reed, who won with a total of 18 under par, three less than Rahm. Bryson DeChambeau was second, one stroke behind the winner.
It was a pity that the player from Barrika did not repeat a round as memorable as the one he shot the day before, when he carded a -10, with nine birdies, only one bogey and an eagle on the 17th, a 144-meter par 3 that he holed off the tee with a wedge. His 61 strokes became the best round of his career, of the history of the tournament and of the Chapultepec course.
