A couple of ties and little else. That’s all Jon Rahm had left over to make history and win in his first event as a professional on the U.S. Tour. The 21-year-old from Biscay was finally third at the Quicken Loans National, four strokes behind the winner, the American Billy Hurley, who won his first title on the PGA Tour.
Rahm, first leader of the tournament after having signed the best round of the tournament (64) and co-leader after the second day, finished third tied with Bill Haas. Two ties, on 8 and 10, and being left on the edge of the hole on 15, and the inspiration of Billy Hurley III deprived the Spaniard of the victory.
In contrast to Rahm’s youth, the veteran second-ranked Vijay Singh from Fiji, who rose to this position thanks to a final round of 65 strokes (-6), the best card of the day, contrasts with the veteran.
Rahm showed a great solidity in the tournament in all areas of the game, both from the green and on the approaches and on the green. He only made one bogey in the last round, on the 17th, and closed the round with 70 strokes (-1).
His third place qualifies him directly to play in the British Open.
“I had a great time. I played well and learned a lot. I am extremely honored to have been invited to play here and to have been able to fight for the win,” said the player from Barrika.
The tournament distributed 6.7 million dollars in prize money, of which the winner pocketed 1.2 million dollars. Rahm’s first ‘salary’ amounted to 400,200 dollars.
