Seven Spaniards fight for the British Ladies Amateur title

Seven Spanish players have reached the play-offs for the title in the British Ladies Amateur held at Machynys Peninsula Golf & Country Club in Wales, one of the most prestigious amateur tournaments held in Europe. Harang Lee from Cantabria, Nuria Iturrios and Luna Sobrón from the Balearic Islands, Noemí Jiménez from Malaga, Natalia Escuriola from Castellón, Silvia Bañón from Alicante and Marta Sanz from Madrid have qualified among the first 64 at the end of the first two days of competition, which has given them access to the qualifying round for the title after passing the cut established at 153 strokes.

Clara Baena, Rocío Sánchez, Andrea Vilarasau, Teresa Caballer and María Palacios, who completed the Spanish representation in this competition, were excluded from the fight for the title.

Australia’s Su-Hyun Oh and Denmark’s Nanna Madsen, tied for first place with 141 strokes, are the top seeds in this new and decisive phase of the British Ladies Amateur, where there is also a large group of Spanish golfers led by Cantabria’s Harang Lee, the most inspired in the first phase by accumulating 146 strokes through two cards of 73 strokes.

It is a curious circumstance that, in the first elimination round for the title, there are four clashes between Spanish and Swedish players, a country with which there has been an intense rivalry in major international tournaments in recent years.

The British Ladies Amateur is one of the most prestigious international women’s tournaments, which also brings back great memories for Spanish golf. It is not in vain that five Spanish players have lifted the champion’s cup, a select list that aims to increase in this edition.

Marta Prieto (in 2001), Elisa Serramiá (2003), Belén Mozo (2006), Carlota Ciganda (2007) and Azahara Muñoz (2009), all of them later professionals, signed the Spanish victories on British soil.
