Sweden’s Lingmerth defeats Rose in play-off at The Memorial

He had lost his two previous play offs, but the third time would come the triumph. The Swede David Lingmerth has added his first victory in the PGA Tour with a victory in one of the prestigious tournaments, The Memorial. And he did it with a simple par on the third playoff hole against Englishman Justin Rose.

Lingmerth is the fourth player to make his PGA debut with The Memorial. After a frantic last round, the Swede was able to reach the clubhouse as leader with -15, but Rose, with a birdie at the 17th, caught him and then, with a par saved after a socket, forced the playoff.

On the first playoff hole, Rose’s par after a magnificent putt was followed by another putt for par by the Swede. On the second hole, also the 18th, Rose went into the green in two from bunker, while Lingmerth dropped to bunker two. The tee shot left it almost given and the par matched Rose’s two putts. On the third, already on the 10th, Rose had trouble getting onto the green, while Lingmerth managed to holed two putts and take the victory with a par. Lingmerth had missed 9 cuts this year, and his best result was a 13th place at the Arnold Palmer.

The tournament left more protagonists, such as Jordan Spieth, the world number two and winner of the Masters, who with 65 strokes climbed to third place with -13, catching Francesco Molinari, who finished with -13 after 71 strokes. With -12 Marc Leishman, Jim Furyk and defending champion Hideki Matsuyama of Japan. Rounding out the top ten were Americans Tony Finau, Kevin Kisner and Kegan Bradley, with -11.

or his part, Tiger Woods, who shot a final round of 74, finished last in the standings with +14. The strong correction of his 85 strokes in the third round, the worst result of his career in the PGA Tour, hurt him a lot.
