Players from some 20 countries on five continents have already registered to participate in the first Lions Clubs World Golf Championship, to be held on the Costa del Sol in March 2015. The tournament is organized by Lions Clubs International Foundation, the world’s largest volunteer organization with 1.3 million members.
The venue for the tournament will be the famous Villa Padierna Golf Resort, near Marbella, where Michelle Obama, wife of the President of the United States, spent her vacations during her visit to Spain. This golf resort, which covers the municipalities of Benahavís and Estepona, has three 18-hole courses and the luxurious Villa Padierna hotel.
This World Championship is a tournament open to all amateurs and will be played in stableford format with three 54-hole categories on two courses of the resort. The atmosphere will be very cosmopolitan, as participants will come from all over the world. Among the great prizes at stake, a Smart Fortwo car valued at 12,000 euros for the winner of the competition and a trip to the Mauritius Islands, valued at 10,000 euros, for the runner-up. Other notable prizes are three vacuum cleaners with very peculiar air purification systems, as they are adorned with shiny crystal inlays and are priced at 2,500 euros each.
In parallel to the World Championship, an interesting cultural and entertainment program will be developed for the enjoyment of the players and their companions.
In addition to a major marketing campaign to widely publicize the tournament, Lions Clubs International Foundation will send a mass e-mailing to all 46,000 Lions clubs in 208 countries and to more than one million people.
The presentation of the tournament took place this morning at the Villa Padierna hotel and was attended by members of the organization, sponsors and the mayors of Estepona and Benahavís, José María García Urbano and José Antonio Mena, respectively.
The tournament has a charitable purpose: to combat measles in the world, a disease that kills 450 children every day and can have serious consequences, such as blindness, for those who have suffered from it.
