Due to the uncertainty caused by the covid-19 epidemic, and not being able to find a satisfactory date within the calendar after the restructuring of the various tournaments, the Mutuactivos Open de España will not be held in 2020.
The cancellation comes from a consensus decision between Madrid Trophy Promotion (MTP), the promoters of the Mutuactivos Open de España, the European Tour and the Royal Spanish Golf Federation (RFEG), and is based on two main reasons: the current situation, which prevents holding the Mutuactivos Open de España as in 2019 and maintaining the continuous line of innovation and quality started last season, and the impossibility of finding a suitable date after the readjustment that the calendar has suffered, with many tournaments postponed as a result of the covid-19.
“Unfortunately, we have had to make a painful decision for everyone,” said Gerard Tsobanian, president and CEO of Madrid Trophy Promotion. “However, given the current circumstances, we believe that the most reasonable thing to do is not to hold the 2020 edition and to put all our efforts into next year. We continue to keep intact the illusion with which we embarked on this adventure and we will work to maintain our quality standards in 2021,” he added. “I would like to thank all the sponsors of the Mutuactivos Open de España for their support and their willingness to continue with us.”
“Spain has played a very important role in the history of the European Tour, and we look forward to working with Gerard Tsobanian and his team on the return of the Mutuactivos Open de España in 2021,” said Keith Waters, chief operating officer of the European Tour. “Madrid Trophy Promotion’s sporting vision and commitment to golf ensures a bright future for this tournament.”
For his part, Gonzaga Escauriaza, president of the RFEG, considered that “stopping the Mutuactivos Open de España is a shame for everyone, but the three parties involved in its organization were clear that it was the right decision given the enormous uncertainty generated by the pandemic and the difficulties in finding the ideal dates. Despite this, we continue with the same enthusiasm with which we started this new project and from now on we are going to work together to make the next Mutuactivos Open de España as spectacular and unforgettable as the one in 2019”.
In October 2019, MTP’s first year at the helm of the historic tournament together with the European Tour and the RFEG, the Mutuactivos Open de España gathered 31,219 people during the four days of competition at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, where Jon Rahm claimed victory, thus revalidating his title as champion.
All fans who have purchased tickets for the Mutuactivos Open de España 2020 will receive a full refund in the coming weeks.
