The LXXX Copa Iberia Trofeo Diputación de Málaga, the oldest amateur team tournament in Spain, will be held on September 25 and 26 at the Real Club de Campo de Málaga and will once again be supported by the local government.
“The province of Malaga is a benchmark in the world of golf and this sporting event demonstrates our potential and ability to host competitions of this magnitude. And, above all, in a year as especially complicated as the one we are living, “said the first vice president and deputy of Education, Youth and Sport of the Diputación de Málaga, Juan Carlos Maldonado, during the presentation of the event, which was also attended by the president of the Royal Andalusian Golf Federation (RFGA), Pablo Mansilla, the president and secretary of the Real Club de Campo, Felix Sanz and Felisa Molinero, and the president of the Competition Committee of the tournament, Miguel Perez.
This competition combines sport and tradition “because it is the oldest amateur golf event in Spain and we will enjoy the eightieth edition thanks to the efforts of all,” continued Maldonado, who thanked the organizers – the Real Club de Campo and the Royal Andalusian Golf Federation (RFGA) – “the enormous effort they are making, taking extreme care of all precautions and taking all necessary measures to be carried out in a safe manner”.
“For the Sports Service of the Diputación de Málaga to promote a competition like this is essential because, on the one hand, we encourage the practice of sport and the health benefits that this entails and, on the other, is a tourist attraction for the province, which translates into an important source of income,” said Maldonado, who stressed that “half a million tourists a year choose Malaga to play this sport by the supply of fields -more than 70- and the climate being the province of Malaga a privileged area in Europe for the practice of golf.
Thus, “Malaga will host another edition of the Iberia Cup, a sporting event that demonstrates every year the potential and ability of the Costa del Sol to host events of this magnitude despite the circumstances we are going through,” said the vice president.

Competition format
The LXXX Copa Iberia Trofeo Diputación de Málaga, whose registration period will remain open until September 21, will be held at the facilities of the Real Club de Campo “in the form of teams of four players, with a maximum limit of 42 participating teams,” said Miguel Perez, who stressed that “36 holes will be played in two rounds of 18 holes, in medal play handicap mode. The first 18 holes will be played in pairs -‘Four Balls’-, and the second 18, individually”.
As for the winners of the competition, Felix Sanz stressed that “only the Club de Campo de Malaga, the Guadalhorce Club de Golf and the Real Club de la Puerta de Hierro have the cup in property, as this is achieved if the title is achieved in three consecutive editions or five alternate editions; the rest are replicas”.
