The Seve Trophy, again for Great Britain and Ireland

The Great Britain and Ireland team won the Seve Trophy for the sixth consecutive time at the St-Nom-La-Bretèche course in France, beating Continental Europe by 15.5 to 12.5 in a thrilling day of singles play.

Continental Europe, captained by Frenchman Jean Van De Velde, started the decisive day ready to erase the five-point deficit with which it ended Saturday’s matches (11.5 to 6.5).

Wins by Thomas Bjorn, Anders Hansen, Francesco Molinari, Alexander Noren and Miguel Angel Jimenez moved Continental Europe into a tie for the tournament lead at 11.5 points.

However, after a draw between Nicolas Colsaerts and David Horsey (12-12), three straight points came from Scott Jamieson (over Pablo Larrazábal), Ian Poulter and Mark Foster that gave the victory to the team of Irishman Paul McGinley. The tournament, already decided, ended with a tie between Peter Hanson and Ross Fisher.

The Seve Trophy, the tournament devised by Severiano Ballesteros, has experienced a special edition this year in the year of the death of its creator. Eutropa Continental has not won this trophy since 2000.
