The Tourism Department of the Mijas Town Hall has presented this morning the I Mijas Sun & Golf golf circuit. It is an event consisting of five qualifying rounds and a final in which players with a valid license of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation may participate.
The tournament will begin next Saturday, June 14 at El Chaparral Golf Club and, until August 24, the day the final will take place, will travel through the following courses in the municipality: Miraflores Golf (June 28), Cerrado del Águila Golf & Resort (July 5), La Noria Golf (July 19) and La Cala Golf Club (August 2). The circuit will end at Mijas Golf Los Lagos, and there will be a gala dinner at the hotel La Zambra.
The Councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez, presented the initiative this morning and reported that registrations are open: “Mijas is a benchmark in golf tourism in Europe, not only for the number of courses, a total of twelve, but also for the orography of the same that make it a unique destination. The golf segment is an important generator of income, visitors and, ultimately, wealth for our municipality and, as published a few weeks ago the specialized platform, Travellyze, is undergoing a significant transformation, aimed at sustainability and environmental awareness, the search for experiences that go beyond the game itself and the adaptation of golf courses to be more accessible, “he explained.
Those interested in participating can formalize their registration through the portal www.golfdirecto.com. Two different categories have been established, a special ladies’ category and a special scratch category (without handicap). Applicants must have a license from the Royal Spanish Golf Federation. The players who reach the final will compete for seven vouchers to play for a year in the Mijas courses that are part of the circuit.
Also present at the presentation were members of the board of directors of the Mijas Golf Courses Association, who are also representatives of the participating courses, and Luis Navarro, tournament director and marketing director of the magazine Andalucía Golf / España Golf, who thanked the Mijas Town Hall for launching the circuit and encouraged lovers of this sport to participate.
“It is a unique event on the Costa del Sol, which has the essential collaboration of the city council. They are the best federated players of each level and is raising a great expectation. In fact, the first event at the El Chaparral course is already practically full,” detailed the president of the Mijas Golf Courses Association and director of El Chaparral, Domingo Gavira.
For his part, Luis Navarro has indicated that the quota for each event will be one hundred players and that he also wants to promote female participation in particular: “The courses are different from each other and this is a great attraction for them. From each one will come out the winners who will compete in the final, which will be on August 24 in Los Lagos. In addition, there will be a gala dinner at La Zambra where the awards ceremony will take place”, the tournament director informed.
