Tiger is recovering from complicated foot, ankle, tibia and fibula surgery.

Tiger Woods, who was involved in a car accident near Los Angeles on Tuesday, has undergone a “lengthy” surgery for injuries to his foot, ankle, tibia and fibula in his right leg. At this point he is awake and recovering from the operation.

“He has undergone extensive surgery on his right lower leg and ankle after being taken to the hospital,” Woods’ team said in a statement. In this document, the medical director and interim CEO of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, Anish Mahajan, has explained that Woods “suffered significant orthopedic injuries to the right lower extremity that were treated during emergency surgery by orthopedic trauma specialists.”

According to Mahajan, the comminuted open fractures-when the bone breaks into two or more fragments-that affected both the upper and lower tibia and fibula bones of Woods “were stabilized by inserting a rod into the tibia.” “Additional injuries to the foot and ankle bones were stabilized with a combination of screws and pins. Trauma to the muscle and soft tissues of the leg required surgical release of the muscle sheath to relieve pressure due to swelling,” Mahajan has detailed.”
Following the medical analysis, Woods’ team has assured that the golfer is currently “awake, responsive and recovering in his hospital room.

Woods was involved in a traffic accident early this morning at approximately 7:00 a.m. local time in Rancho Palos Verdes, a small town near Los Angeles. Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva explained that Woods was traveling “at high speed” down a steep downhill slope, although the investigation is still ongoing.

“I was going at a relatively higher speed than normal. Because it’s downhill, it slopes and it also curves, that area has a high frequency of accidents. It’s not uncommon,” Villanueva said.

Woods, 45, was in the area for the PGA Tour Genesis Invitational at the Riviera Country Club Pacific Palisades near Santa Monica in Los Angeles.
