Excessive speed on a dangerous stretch of road in Los Angeles may have been the cause last night of the car accident that ended with Tiger Woods hospitalized with serious injuries in both legs and that may jeopardize his sporting future. The winner of fifteen majors did not lose consciousness at any time but had to be removed from the vehicle by firefighters after breaking the front window due to the damage to the car. After undergoing surgery, the Californian player was awake and recovering from his injuries, the exact extent of which has not yet been disclosed.
The road departure occurred on a curve in a downhill mountain section, in an area known as a trouble spot for speeding and accidents.
Officers attending the incident saw no evidence of cognitive impairment in Tiger, a police source said, so they did not ask hospital staff to draw his blood to check for possible alcohol or other substance ingestion.
Woods, 45, was driving shortly after 7 a.m. in Rancho Palos Verdes, near Los Angeles, when the vehicle crossed the median and two lanes before veering off the roadway, striking a tree and ending up on its side in the bushes just yards from the road.
A Los Angeles County police officer who was the first to arrive said he found Woods still in the driver’s seat, with his seat belt fastened, and that the golfer was able to tell him his name was Tiger.
The 2019 Masters winner was lucid and calm, but potentially in shock, and did not appear to be concerned about his injuries at the time.
Firefighters put Woods in a neck brace, placed splints on his legs and used a backboard to pull him through the windshield gap and into an ambulance.
