Valle Romano Golf & Resort will be, for the second consecutive year, the venue for the Andalucía Costa del Sol Match Play 9. This Cabell B. Robinson design will become the best scenario for this tournament in Match Play format of the Challenge Tour to be played from June 20 to 23 in one of the most spectacular designs of the Costa del Sol.
This is a competition with an innovative format where players will compete during two rounds in Stroke Play. After these first rounds, the best 64 will go on to a 9-hole Match Play elimination phase. Among the main candidates for victory, several professionals with a past on the European Tour will be looking to return to the highest category of European golf on the Costa del Sol. Felipe Aguilar, Richard Bland, Maarten Lafeber or Gregory Havret will try to win in Estepona, but names such as Pedro Oriol, Carlos Pigem or Eduardo de la Riva will surely want to leave the champion’s cup in Spanish territory.
This is the only tournament of the year in the Challenge Tour calendar that will be played in a Match-Play format and the second of the events of this circuit to be played in Spain, after the Challenge of Spain that was played in May at the Izki Golf course in Vitoria.
Scotland’s Liam Johnson won the second edition of the Costa del Sol Match Play 9 held in 2018 by beating his compatriot Grant Forrest in the final round. Special mention deserves the cast of Spanish players who will take part in this tournament among which stand out Mario Galiano, Scott Fernández, Borja Virto or the Malaga-born Manuel Quirós who harvested a magnificent fifth place in the 2018 edition. It is, therefore, a perfect tournament to define the Order of Merit of the Challenge Tour and a victory in Valle Romano can pave the way to the European Tour 2020.
Inaugurated in 2010, Valle Romano Golf & Resort is a Cabell B Robinson design designed to the smallest detail that makes the player feel that he is enjoying a course with many carats. A continuous challenge for the professionals who will play this Andalucía Match Play 9 that, for sure, will guarantee a great show. It will be the second stop of the Challenge Tour in Spain after the Challenge of Spain in Izki in May.
The Andalucía Match Play 9 is possible thanks to the joint collaboration of Turismo Costa del Sol, the Royal Spanish Golf Federation and the Royal Andalusian Golf Federation. The Royal Andalusian Golf Federation is the promoter of the tournament organized by JGolf18.0.
