Finca Cortesin Hotel, Golf & Spa has brought to life the story of how it became the first golf course in Spain to install a new variety of bermuda on all its greens with the launch of a video about the ambitious project.
Every stage of the implementation of the new Bermuda Ultra Dwarf grass variety to improve the playing surfaces on the course of the luxury Andalusian resort has been captured in detail.
Overseen by Head Greenkeeper Ignacio Soto, the conversion program began in June 2016 at a nursery 600 kilometers from Finca Cortesín in Plasencia, Cáceres, with the four-and-a-half minute film highlighting the painstaking care and attention with which it was carried from the first seed.
After spending 12 months tending the turf in growing conditions, the resort used the latest in machinery to cut the sod before transporting it to the course, where Soto and his maintenance crew began the meticulous process of implementing the 18 greens and putting green.
Having grown grass in the nursery, disruption for golfers was reduced to a minimum, and the video reveals that the course was able to reopen just a month after work began, and the renovation project has already won global praise, winning the 2018 IAGTO Sustainability Award for Resource Efficiency.
Miguel Girbés, director of golf at Finca Cortesin Hotel, Golf & Spa, said: “The improvement of the greens is one of the most ambitious golf projects ever undertaken at Finca Cortesin and is the culmination of years of hard work.
“It was very important to have a lasting record of the work done, and the video is a perfect illustration of the care and attention to detail that the Resort prides itself on providing the ultimate luxury experience to all of our guests.”
Set on a large 532-acre estate, Finca Cortesin’s 18-hole championship course was designed by Cabell Robinson and has hosted numerous high-profile tournaments since opening in 2006, including the Volvo World Match Play Championship in 2009, 2011 and 2012. It is also a member of the exclusive European Tour Properties network.
