One of these two iconic figures is well known to golf fans around the world; the other, less so. Arnold Palmer needs no introduction among golfers. LeRoy Neiman, however, is not as popular among golf enthusiasts, although the gentleman was an American artist known for his vibrant expressionist paintings and silkscreen prints of athletes and sporting events.
In 1974 he painted Palmer in a colorful kaleidoscopic style the same year the golf legend was welcomed into the World Golf Hall of Fame. The image was also used as the cover of the April 1974 issue of Golf Digest magazine, and is now being offered for sale by sports specialty auction firm Heritage at its “Platinum Night,” to be held on the 25th and 26th of this month.
In case the estimated price of $100,000 might be a bit or quite daunting for most of us, the auction will include two other more affordable Palmer-related items: the black and white Footjoy shoes he wore when winning his first title in 1958 (estimated price $15,000), and a signed 1995 poster depicting all U.S. Ryder Cup captains since 1927 (estimated value $4,000).
