The forecasts are coming true and one of the favorites, Jordan Spieth, has taken the lead in the standings at the Augusta Masters after the first round. The new American hero, only 21 years old, has made 8 under par (64) and is three ahead of the quartet that shares the second position: Charlie Hoffman, Justin Rose, Enrie Els and Jason Day. Sergio Garcia was the best Spaniard and, with 4 under par, shares sixth place with Russell Henley. Miguel Angel Jimenez, with plus 6, and Chema Olazabal, with 7 over par, have started the tournament with a very bad start.
Young Jordan got off to such a good start at Augusta that he came within one stroke of the record for a major.
“I certainly played well. I’m very excited about the way I hit the ball,” stated Spieth, who birdied eight of the first 14 holes.
The other top favorites for the title, Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy and American Bubba Watson, finished the first day one stroke under par, while Tiger Woods ended his eventful round one over par at +1 and ranked 41st tied with a dozen players, including veterans Bernhard Langer and Mark O’Meara.
