As every year since 1993, March 22 is celebrated worldwide as World Water Day, which was created by the United Nations during a conference on Environment and Development held a year earlier. Since that time, the celebrations of this day are carried out on the basis of a specific annual theme, which is defined by the organization and whose purpose is to be able to address the problems related to water and water resources. For this reason, the public water company Acosol, dependent on the Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental, which supplies recycled water to most of the golf courses in this tourist area, has joined this celebration.
It is a day to discuss how we should manage water resources in the future. In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly designated March 22 as the first World Water Day. More than twenty years have passed and World Water Day continues to be celebrated around the world, each year highlighting a different issue. It highlights the concern for the conservation of the environment and of this most important resource, water.
On this occasion, the theme assigned to commemorate the celebration of World Water Day is “Water and Sustainable Development”; according to the United Nations, “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (UN, 1987).
Acosol has joined this campaign to raise awareness about water and sanitation, basic pillars of our company. Thus, World Water Day is a key date for companies engaged in the management and supply of water, as in the case of Acosol. The commitment and commitment to respect for the environment is a fundamental part in the development of a company of this type.
Acosol’s work in the area of drinking water is carried out through the improvement of quality and in the area of wastewater, taking care of three fundamental aspects: collecting them, avoiding contamination by dumping them in watercourses, treating them so as not to contaminate the sea and recycling them to reuse them for irrigation, thus reducing the consumption of drinking water.
On the other hand, in order to guarantee the supply to the entire Costa del Sol, the public water company has carried out works that interconnect the basins between the Campo de Gibraltar – Río Verde – Málaga – Axarquía. In this way, Acosol can transfer water from one basin to another, thus balancing the resources. This is a very important point to achieve a correct administration of water resources.
In addition, Acosol maintains more than 800 kilometers of main and secondary supply pipelines that carry water to private homes and to the general reservoirs of housing developments and municipalities, from where other companies are responsible for distributing it to users.
The water supply to the Western Costa del Sol comes from several sources: surface resources, such as the Concepción Dam on the Verde River, the main contribution; desalination, which is the extraordinary resource that ensures a minimum amount in the supply to users; and subway resources.
AWARENESS
Awareness of water saving is essential in this area and to do so, just follow a few simple steps:
-Washing machines and dishwashers are always full, as they use the same amount of water regardless of the load of clothes and dishes, respectively. So, filling it with an optimal load saves up to 40 liters of water and optimizes water consumption.
-Tightly closing the faucets after use, since a simple dripping faucet can waste more than 90 liters of water per week.
Taking a daily five-minute shower, instead of a bath, makes it possible to save up to 400 liters of water per week.
-Watering early or late in the day, but not too much, also saves considerable water, as this reduces evaporation loss.
-Don’t use the toilet as a wastebasket. If you place a wastebasket in the bathroom you will avoid flushing the toilet every time you use the toilet as a trash can.
