Andalusia will compete with a dozen European destinations in its goal of hosting in 2019 the celebration of the Solheim Cup golf, as announced today by the Minister of Tourism and Trade after the celebration yesterday in London of an information seminar on the submission of applications, which is the start of the process that will conclude with the final choice of the venue.
This tournament, considered the women’s Ryder Cup and which follows a similar format, is held every two years, alternating its venues between the United States and Europe, and is one of the main events of the sport, as it usually brings together about 100,000 fans.Alonso, in the framework of the ITB in Berlin, said that after yesterday’s participation in this seminar with the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, Andalusia “will enter fully into the fray” and was convinced that the celebration in the community “would allow excellent opportunities for promotion and consolidation as one of the main golf destinations in continental Europe.
He underscored the stiff competition in this objective, since interest has been shown in presenting candidacies in Scotland, Wales, England, Portugal, Holland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Turkey. He therefore considered that there is still “a lot of hard work to be done, in which we want to incorporate the public and private industry to form a strong and compact candidacy”.After the start of this process, the next milestone will be in August with the final presentation of the candidature dossiers; while in September it will be possible to know directly the dimension and prestige of the event, which this year will be held in Germany.
Subsequently, between the months of October and November, the tournament organizers will make evaluation visits to candidate destinations and, finally, in December the host of the 2019 Solheim Cup will be decided and finally announced.Alonso also noted that, along with the celebration of this tournament of high media impact, the dissemination of the host destination will be extended over the next five years, as the community would host until 2020 the ‘Andalucía Open de España’ of the official European women’s calendar, in addition to having prominence in the Solheim Cup 2017 in the United States.
