The Andalucía Costa del Sol Match Play 9 2019 starts today. The Valle Romano Golf & Resort course is the setting, for the second consecutive year, of this innovative Match Play format tournament that promises spectacularity and excitement until Sunday. Ahead there will be 36 holes to qualify among the top 64 of the leaderboard and from there, one-on-one duels to elucidate who will win next Sunday on the Costa del Sol.
Felipe Aguilar, Challenge Tour Player: “It is a very entertaining tournament in a spectacular setting and promises to be a lot of fun. Valle Romano Golf & Resort is a great course and our main objective is to qualify among the top 64 after Friday’s cut and, from there, try to fight every match to play on Sunday. In match play tournaments you can’t let your guard down because you don’t know what can happen on the next hole.
This is a competition with an innovative format where players will compete during two rounds in Stroke Play. After these first rounds, the best 64 will go on to a 9-hole Match Play elimination phase. Among the main candidates for victory, several professionals with a past in the European Tour who will seek on the Costa del Sol their return to the highest category of European golf. Felipe Aguilar, Richard Bland, Maarten Lafeber or Gregory Havret will try to win in Estepona, but names such as Pedro Oriol, Carlos Pigem or Manuel Elvira will surely want to leave the champion’s cup in Spanish territory.
Manuel Elvira, Challenge Tour Player: “The course is very good with hard fairways and greens that roll very well so you can hit your drive well and hope that the wind doesn’t blow too much so that things don’t get too complicated. There are many holes that are going to be exciting with par 5s that can be reached in twos and par 4s that can be reached from one to the green and there are going to be many strategies to achieve good results. This match play format is going to be a lot of fun and I hope that the rival to beat at the end of the week will be me”.
Valle Romano Golf & Resort will become this week a perfect setting for this tournament. This design by Cabell B. Robinson promises excitement to the spectators and surely in Match Play format will turn each stroke of this Challenge Tour into a real challenge in order to achieve victory. Yesterday, Wednesday, a pro-am was played in which amateurs and sponsors were able to share golfing experience with those who will be the protagonists of the whole week. 108 amateurs shared a round of competition with players such as Richard Bland, Pedro Oriol, Borja Virto or Felipe Aguilar.
