Berná started off very nervous, with two bogeys on 1 and 3 and a double bogey on 7, which weighed heavily, especially because he had birdied 5 and because Alejandro Esmatges was going like a motorcycle, with four consecutive birdies on 8, 9, 10 and 11.
“It had already happened to me once, as an amateur, that I was six or seven strokes ahead in the final round, and as I had only played a few holes, and with more than half a round to go, it was reduced to two. Then I stopped, thought and reacted: I decided to continue playing my game and that the one who had to catch me was the other one. And that’s what I did today,” said Berná.
Esmatges’ streak was stopped with a bogey at the 12th Berná decided to get back to his game, keep calm and finish with a great birdie at the 18th to conquer a tournament and take it to his native Soria, as ambassador of the city, elected European City of Sport 2019. Great news for Spanish sport.
Tied with -6, in second position next to Esmatges, also finished Javier Sainz, with a good card of eight birdies and two bogeys.
Alfredo García Heredia, winner of the regularity race
There was a lot of expectation about the performance of Alfredo García Heredia, who this year has won in such varied scenarios as RACE in Madrid, Riocerezo in Burgos and in the Match-Play of Pozoblanco, Córdoba. However, the Asturian started the week badly and that has been a burden that has been dragging throughout the tournament. From less to more, García Heredia said goodbye with a very good fifth position of the tournament, and as winner of this first Order of Merit of the national circuit.
