Luke Donald believes the great memories he has of Wentworth can help him win his third consecutive BMW PGA.
Donald, who won it in 2011 and 2012, is aiming to equal the record of three consecutive victories set by Colin Montgomerie, but also recognizes that now is not the time to think about breaking records.
“I have to look at it as one more opportunity to go out and win a tournament and not put pressure on myself thinking about other things, although I recognize that I would love to follow in Monty’s footsteps.
Donald believes that his recent successes on the West Course may be due in part to the latest remodeling of the course that has made it more technical and more demanding.
“Since the changes were made, this course seems tailor-made for my game. I have felt very comfortable playing here and I hope it will be the same this year. It has become a strategy course. Since Ernie redid the greens it forces us to hit more precise irons to very specific areas.
“The deep bunkers don’t worry me too much because I’m pretty good in sand. Here the important thing is to get the strategy of each shot right, a bit like in The Players, where I’m pretty good on sand. you don’t automatically drive, but you play a lot of irons and a lot of woods off the tee. Hitting is not the most important thing, and that works in my favor”.
“Although lately my problem has been precision shots. I’m working a lot on distances of less than 90 meters and I’m starting to see some results. Those are the shots that separate those who reach Sunday fighting for the title from those who remain in the top 20 and I want to be one of those fighting for the title.”
