First edition of the Footgolf Europa Cup in Atalaya Golf

Atalaya Golf Country Club hosted this international event last weekend, from November 14 to 16.

Dutchman Bjorn Bulk is becoming the Leo Messi of Footgolf. Bulk, who hails from Amsterdam, has won the inaugural Footgolf Europe Cup in a tie with Attila Karakas of Hungary. Bulk won the playoff after making an eagle on the 4th hole on the last day, which gave him a big advantage over Karakas.

Bulk, who recently won the unofficial World Footgolf Championship and other major Footgolf events has a new sponsor and hopes to turn professional very soon. No one has won more titles in Footgolf than Dutchman Bjorn Bulk in the short time the sport has been taken seriously.

Italy won the team event beating Republic of Ireland, Hungary, Netherlands, Spain and Portugal.

Footgolf arrived on golf courses in 2009 and has since grown as a sideshow at clubs around the world. Golf clubs are known for their rules and regulations, so the idea of balling a soccer ball on the course seemed unthinkable five years ago, but that’s exactly what seems to be happening around the world today. You play with a standard-sized soccer ball, kick it into an oversized hole and the flag; FootGolf has even received the PGA seal of approval.

With over 70 golf courses on the Costa del Sol in Spain, “FootGolfers” are being welcomed with open arms, simply to help cover the weekly expenses of a clubhouse. Surely it won’t be long before we see a Masters, Green Jacket, Claret Jug or Golden Boot event for the winner.

The Footgolf Europa Cup of Andalusia has been organized by the EFGF, European Footgolf Federation and AFIES, Asociación Footgolf Internacional España.
