Fowler wins Deutsche Bank and Spieth regains the world throne

Rickie Fowler, in a thrilling duel in the final round, beat Sweden’s Henrik Stenson to win the Deutsche Bank Championship, a FedExCup playoff tournament with $8.25 million in prize money.

The American overturned a three-stroke deficit with eight holes to go and finished the final round with a score of 68 strokes (-3), for a total of 269 strokes (-15).

The winner finished the final round with an eagle, three birdies and two bogeys for an error-free performance on the back nine.

For his part, Sweden’s Stenson suffered a double bogey at the 16th, which ultimately cost him the victory.

The European, who had started the day one stroke behind Fowler, finally finished with a 70 (-1) and a total of 270 (-14). Third was the American Charley Hoffman, who shot a final round 67 (-4) and a total of 273 (-11).

Meanwhile, Jordan Spieth, despite missing the cut on the second day of the tournament, will regain his number one position in the world golf ranking.

The US Open and Masters champion returns to the top of the world rankings after Rory McIlroy failed to finish in the top 10 of the tournament. Fowler, meanwhile, has moved up from ninth to fifth place in the overall ranking.
