Carlos García Simarro from Castellón has won again by winning the Peugeot Tour Alps of Spain held at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid with a total of 11 strokes under par. The Spaniards have dominated the classification with Eduardo de la Riva in tied second place, while Blázquez, Luna and Domingo share fourth place in a tournament shared with the Alps Tour where golfers from 14 European countries have participated. This is the second Spanish victory achieved this season in the Alps Tour, following the one achieved by Sánchez Palencia in Guadeloupe.
Vicente Blázquez from Madrid started the final day with an advantage of 3 strokes, which he reduced by finishing the first 6 holes with a bogey and a double bogey against the magnificent performance of García Simarro, who in the same number of holes scored three birdies. Therefore, the result was completely reversed and by the 9 seconds it was García Simarro who walked with 10 under par against Blázquez’s 7 under, a result that was matched by Eduardo de la Riva who scored 4 birdies in the first 7 holes.
Finally, Carlos García scored another birdie on the 14th hole to widen the distance and consolidate his hegemony in the last holes of the competition and despite the bogey on the 18th, he won the tournament with a total of 10 under par; in second position Eduardo de la Riva and Jason Barnes were 4 strokes behind with minus 6; and in fourth position Vicente Blázquez, Santiago Luna and Agustín Domingo were tied.
Carlos García Simarro: “Six years after the Peugeot de Laukariz in 2005, I won again, and it was worth it to do it in the Peugeot del Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, for me, one of the best courses in Spain. It was a tense round, but on the 3rd hole I left it a handicap for birdie and it gave me a lot of peace of mind. I kicked very well for the first 9, but putting the putts from 9 to 11 for par gave me the final cushion. On the last hole I made bogey for the third time, I don’t know what happens to me that the 18th hole marks me on any course, I don’t usually finish well, fortunately today I had the advantage to take the risk. I think if I had had someone closer, it would have been very difficult for me to withstand the pressure. I am happy to win again, to do it in this tournament, on this course, with a 4-stroke lead, very happy. Now I have to rethink my goals for the rest of the season, I have just become a father and things have changed a lot, I have signed up for the School but… it is not every day Christmas”.
Eduardo de la Riva: The player from Barcelona had a fantastic start with birdies on holes 3, 4, 5 and 7 that presaged a new victory (he won in the 2007 Peugeot) but failed on holes 10 and 11 to, with 69 strokes had to settle for second place with a total of 6 strokes under par: “The first 9 I have played unbeatable, I have shot for birdie on all holes and I have putted perfect putts. But it started to get windy, I had a mistake on the 10th tee, I should have played the 3 wood and I played the drive and I paid for it with a bogey; on the 11th both Santi and I made a mistake, we thought we had a headwind and it was a tailwind and we went 20 meters too far. From then on I shot all the time for a birdie and I didn’t get one, a pity because it didn’t work out, another time”.
De la Riva has shared the second position with the British Jason Barnes, who once again has had to settle for second place behind a Spaniard, as happened in the tournament on the French island of Guadeloupe, where Sanchez Palencia won, but this second place has catapulted him to the first position in the Order of Merit of the Alps Tour, followed by the bi-champion of the season Chris Paisley; the best Spanish classified in the ranking is Ignacio Sanchez Palencia in fifth place.
Three Spaniards tied for fourth place with 5 strokes under par: Vicente Blázquez who shot 76, Santiago Luna 70 and Agustín Domingo 68.
