Cody Blick is a lucky young man, because it takes a lot of luck to have your clubs stolen on the eve of a decisive round for your career as a professional golfer and not end up collapsed. The 25-year-old American player had his clubs stolen from his garage the night before a decisive match: the last round of the final round of the Web.com Tour Qualifying School, the second circuit in the U.S. ranking, in which the best have direct access to the PGA Tour the following season.
His $5,000 reward to anyone with information about his stolen clubs had no effect, so he called Titleist and his local representatives quickly gathered what they could, including a driver from a golf club manager and several clubs from a pro-shop.
Blick only had time to hit a few balls before heading to the first tee at Whilrwind Golf Club in Chandler, Arizona. He had to shoot an 8-under-par round to be eligible to play on the Web.com Tour next year. And the truth is that things started going great for him. He did the first nine holes in 32. He did not miss a fairway with the driver and the other clubs responded perfectly. In the end he made nine birdies (three on the last three holes) in a bogey-free round, or 63, for an overall 19 under par. He had started the day in 74th place and finished it in 25th, which guarantees him at least eight tournaments on the 2019 Web.com Tour.
“It was one of those things you never think can happen to you,” Blick said referring to his odyssey with a happy ending.
