The 40-year-old American golfer had already won this tournament on two previous occasions and this time he did it beating by three strokes the quartet formed by Stewart Cink, who had the lowest round, 62 strokes, Beay Hossler, JB Holmes and Paul Casey. The latter squandered the four-stroke lead he had accumulated in the top 54 with a final round of 72 (+2), the worst among the top 40 finishers.
Watson’s first victory in the Travelers took place in 2010. Since then, things have changed a lot for him, both on a family level (Bubba and his wife, Angie, have adopted two children, Caleb and Dakota), and on a sporting level, as he has won eleven other times, including two majors, the 2012 and 2014 Augusta Masters.
This was also his third victory of the season, following his wins at the World Golf Championship-Dell Technologies Match Play and the Genesis Open. Watson has earned just over five million dollars in prize money on the PGA Tour this year and is third in the FedExCup standings. He is 13th in the world rankings after moving up seven places this week.
As a curious fact of the Travelers Championship, it is worth mentioning the longest drive recorded in the tournament, the one hit by Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy on hole 7, par 4: he sent the ball 381 yards off the tee. McIlroy finished twelfth, with 11 under par, six behind the champion.
