
By the quietest of the quiet. This is how the Australian Jason Day has been climbing positions in the world ranking to reach, today, the highest position, the number one. And he has achieved it after scoring yesterday his fifth title of the season -no less than the fourth in his last six tournaments- in the multimillionaire BMW Championship, played at the Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest (Illinois).
Day jumps two places in the ranking from third place, overtaking Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy and the American Jordan Spieth, to occupy the top spot in the world golf ranking for the first time in his career.
Jason, 27, is the third Australian golfer to be ranked number one in the world, after Greg Norman and Adam Scott.
In a dream year, he joins his previous titles at Farmers Insurance, the Canadian Open, The Barclays and the US PGA. Day has won four of the last six tournaments he has played in.
The player from Beaudesert (Queensland) won this Sunday the BMW Championship, one of the tournaments of the so-called playoffs of the FedExCup, with a total of 262 strokes (22 under par), six less than the American Daniel Berger, and seven less than the also American Scott Piercy. J.B. Holmes, Rickie Fowler and Rory McIlroy finished eight behind.
Sergio García finished in thirty-ninth place, fifteen strokes behind the winner.
Day leads the world ranking with 12.6404, followed by McIlroy with 1.8888 and Spieth with 11.8569. Sergio holds the tenth position.
