Jordi Flotats has been proclaimed champion of the Andalusia Cup, a competition scoring for the World, National and Andalusian Ranking, which has been developed during three days at Lauro Golf.
Once again this season, the tournament has brought together the best golfers on the national scene, with the exception of those who are studying in the United States. In fact, thirty of the 110 players who took the start have a handicap equal or lower than zero, which gives an idea of the level of a competition that last year was won by Victor Pastor from Cordoba at the Club de Golf La Cañada.
As for foreign participation, the host club itself provided four players of Finnish nationality, in a clear commitment made by this course, located in the Malaga municipality of Alhaurín de la Torre, to promote the sport of high competition, in this case through collaboration agreements with federations in northern Europe, where the practice of golf is paralyzed in the winter period.
One of the highlights of this championship has been the magnificent work of preparation, control and care performed by the maintenance team of Lauro Golf. Thus, the extraordinary effort of these workers has resulted in a course in perfect condition, despite the adverse weather conditions in the weeks prior to the celebration of the event, contributing significantly to the success of this prestigious competition.
In terms of sporting matters, the opening day of the Andalusia Cup ended with the Malaga-born Jacobo Cestino in the lead thanks to a round of 70 strokes (2 under par).
On the second day, Iván Cantero burst into the tournament with force and after delivering a spectacular round of 66 strokes (-6), he was at the top of the leaderboard with a five-stroke lead over his most direct rivals.
After this day, the first fifty classifieds passed the cut, accessing to a final and exciting day where two rounds of 18 holes were played.
In the morning session, Iván Cantero was not as successful as in the previous day and with a card of 77 strokes he was relegated to fourth place.
Juan Francisco Sarasti took the lead with a cumulative score of 214 (-2), one less than Jordi Flotats, and two ahead of Manuel Elvira and Iván Cantero.
In the afternoon session, Jordi Flotats achieved his best round of the championship (71 strokes), which allowed him to climb to the top of the leaderboard with a score of 286 strokes (72+73+70+71).
The runner-up, two strokes behind the winner, was shared by Jorge Simón, author of an excellent fourth round of 67 strokes (-5), and Iván Cantero.
Likewise, the trophy for the first cadet classified went to Xabier Gorospe with a total of 299 strokes (73+77+72+77).
Regarding the Andalusian players, Víctor Pastor could not revalidate the title he won last year, although he achieved a meritorious fourth place.
In addition, Huelva’s Carlos Leandro (9th) also finished in the top ten of the Andalusia Cup 2013.
After the end of the competition, the awards ceremony began with the presence of Mr. Ángel de la Riva, Honorary President of the Royal Andalusian Golf Federation; Ms. Tove María Pedersen, President of Lauro Golf; Mr. Carlos Pitarch, Manager of the host club; and Mr. Alfonso Barrionuevo, Chief Referee of the championship.
