Mickelson returns to winning ways after nearly five-year drought

Phil Mickelson has once again tasted the sweetness of victory that he had not tasted for almost five years, since he won the 2013 British Open. The Golden Lefty has achieved it in the World Series Championship in Mexico, after getting rid of Justin Thomas in the playoff, in a final tournament in which Rafa Cabrera-Bello could have won the title. The player from the Canary Islands finished one stroke behind the playoff protagonists. Cabrera-Bello, who started the last round tied with Mickelson, two strokes behind the leader, Johnson, came to co-lead the tournament thanks to an eagle on hole 1. However, despite his great performance, his 67 strokes were not enough against Mickelson’s 66 and Thomas’ 64, who totaled 268, 16 under par.

Sergio García finished in seventh place and Jon Rahm finished 20th, which has caused him to lose a place in the world ranking and to cede second place to Justin Thomas.

Mickelson, 47, said: “It’s been a tough four years, I think I’m playing my best golf and I still have a lot of wins left in me. It’s been tough, I’ve struggled to get my game back but I love a challenge”.
