Scheffler wins his 3rd major after holding off Rahm’s pressure

Scheffler holds off Rahm’s comeback and wins his third major

In sport everything can change in a matter of minutes, and that is what happened to Jon Rahm in the final stretch of the PGA Championship, the second major of the season and the stage chosen by the Basque to show his best version. Late in the final day, Rahm had very real options to become the first Spaniard to win this tournament, but three final holes to forget ended up relegating him to eighth place at Quail Hollow Club (Charlotte).

Five strokes separated the Spaniard from the lead on the 1st tee, a considerable difference, especially considering that the leader was Scottie Scheffler. However, this stretch was shortening as Rahm was signing birdies -until the 15th hole accumulated three without any failure- and the American was stuck with three bogeys.

Scheffler and Rahm’s half round, pure tension

Both came to share the lead in the middle part of the round. But everything went wrong from the 16th, resolved by Rahm with a bogey. On the 17th the Spaniard took the logical risks of the situation and went into the water; it was the first of the two double bogeys with which he closed a week that, despite that painful end, should leave him a good lesson: he is still competitive among the best.

Rahm’s finish cleared Scottie Scheffler’s path to another major triumph. In view of the numbers, his victory is absolutely indisputable: he won with five strokes ahead of the runners-up, Bryson DeChambeau, Harris English and Davis Riley.

Another war was that of David Puig (+6) and Sergio Garcia (+7), the other two Spaniards who have played the weekend and who have finished far from the top positions at Quail Hollow. It is worth remembering that Eugenio López-Chacarra (+4) said goodbye to the tournament on Friday when he did not make the cut.

Rahm, his effort against Scheffler and his day

A 67 boosted Rahm on the third day Jon Rahm needed to give a blow on the table on the third day of the PGA Championship and he gave it with force and forcefulness. The Basque shot a 67 on Saturday and climbed to provisional fifth place at -6.

The third round at the exclusive Quail Hollow course was played in a persistent wind that complicated the golfers’ game. Not so much that of Jon Rahm, who was firm with the putt and, above all, with the irons. Only a breakaway on the 11th hole put him in trouble. Seven birdies put him in the fight for the victory.
