Tiger Woods has done it again, to add a new title, his fourth of the year, in what is unofficially considered the fifth Major of the season, The Players, played in Ponte Vedra (Florida). Sergio Garcia, who was tied for the lead with the world number one on the last day, suffered a real setback and, with his final 76 strokes, finished in eighth place.
Woods returned to competition for the first time since last month’s Augusta Masters. The American did not lose the status of leader he acquired at the end of the third round and, although he made a double fault on the 14th hole and a bogey on the 6th, the five birdies he pocketed left him in first place with a total of 275 strokes, 13 under par.
The California player had already won this $9.5 million tournament, held at the TPC Sawgrass, once before, in 2001.
Finishing two strokes behind Woods were Americans Kevin Streelman and Jeff Maggert and Swede David Lingmerth.
Sergio, who was having a great tournament and started the last round alongside Tiger in the first position, presented a final card of 76 strokes with two double bogeys on holes 17 and 18, two bogeys on holes 4 and 10 and four birdies, which relegated him to eighth place, with an overall score of 281 strokes. The first three days he had signed rounds of 68, 65 and 72 impacts.
