South Korea’s Sun Hyun Park wins KPMG Women’s PGA Championship

South Korea’s Sun Hyun Park wins the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in the first triple play-off in the 63-year history of the tournament.

Park has prevailed over compatriot So Yeon Ryu and Japan’s Nasa Hataoka after they finished tied at 10 under par at Kemper Lakes near Chicago.

Play was suspended for 20 minutes during the play-off due to inclement weather and Park secured his second major in less than a year with birdies on each of the two play-off holes.

The 24-year-old, last year’s Women’s US Open champion, defeated her compatriot Ryu, who could have achieved the top spot in the world ranking if she wins.

Ryu, ranked fifth, and Park, sixth, both birdied the first hole of the play-off, while Nataoka was eliminated after shooting par.

The South Koreans, who shared the 2017 LPGA Player of the Year award, were on the green of the second playoff hole when play was suspended due to hazardous weather conditions.

When play resumed, Ryu missed his birdie putt and Park holed his for the win.

England’s Charley Hull was fourth, four strokes behind the leaders.

Of the four Spaniards who played in the tournament, only one made the cut, Carlota Ciganda, who finished in thirty-third place after closing the tournament with her worst round: 78 strokes.
