Study to improve reclaimed water for irrigation of golf courses in Costa del Sol

The Association of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol has held various meetings with agents of the golf sector, both public and private, during its stay at FITUR, highlighting the meeting between the president of the Association and Acosol, Manuel Cardeña, and the president of the Royal Andalusian Golf Federation, Pablo Mansilla, to define the actions to be carried out to promote golf tourism, the irrigation of its courses with reclaimed water and the commitment to care for the environment, among other issues.

For Manuel Cardeña, “public-private collaboration to strengthen synergies and create projects that generate economic, social and environmental impact in the region is one of our objectives in the short term, for this we have the coordination of the Junta de Andalucía”. Therefore, this meeting with the Royal Andalusian Golf Federation is an important step in the study investments to improve the quality and quantity of reclaimed water received by the fields, as it is a sustainable tool and that against the situation of water scarcity that we suffer, helps us to alleviate its consequences,” said Cardeña.

For his part, Mansilla thanked the Mancomunidad for its willingness and commitment to the use and efficiency of reclaimed water, which “is here to stay”. “We agreed on our commitment so that together we continue to promote the use of reclaimed water through investments to improve the quality and massive use by all golf courses,” he stressed.

The Costa del Golf has excellent data, which the president of the Commonwealth has highlighted since “golf is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the region, placing the average stay of golf tourists of 12.3 days and stays in four and five star hotels; and their average expenditure of the trip is estimated at more than 1,800 euros. It also has a great role in the deseasonalization, in the loyalty of the destination and in the generation of wealth and employment by providing income of 1,400 million and 17,700 jobs to the Costa del Sol.

This meeting has put on the table the different actions that can be carried out between the public-private sector to find innovative solutions and have a water supply system for irrigation to ensure the perfect condition of the courses, creating a commitment between the Association of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol, the Royal Andalusian Golf Federation and the nearly 50 golf courses in the region, always hand in hand with the Junta de Andalucía.

In addition, the current drought situation and other aspects related to climate change that affect the sector have been discussed, reinforcing and strengthening the commitment to care for the environment and the search for new, more sustainable actions.
