The inaugural edition of the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open, the first official event co-sanctioned by the European, Asian and South African Tours, will be played this week.
Leading the European contingent is Denmark’s Thomas Bjørn, holder of 21 wins worldwide, most recently in South Africa last season. The Great Dane, will face two winners of the 2015 season: Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat and South Africa’s George Coetzee.
Aphibarnrat arrives in Mauritius ninth in the Race to Dubai after his victory last month at the Shenzhen International.
Coetzee won his second European Tour title at the Tshwane Open in March. Last week he returned to competition at the WGC – Cadillac Match Play after a month’s break.
Another player making his comeback this week is Thorbjørn Olesen. After winning his second tour title at the Perth International in October, he had to undergo surgery for a hamstring injury in his left hand. The recovery has been slower than expected, and the Dane is hungry for competition.
Nine Spaniards are competing in Mauritius this week: Javier Colomo, Jordi García Pinto, Pablo Martín Benavides, Carlos del Moral, Pedro Oriol, Carlos Pigem, Eduardo de la Riva, Álvaro Velasco and Borja Virto.
A total of 132 players are participating: 40 from each of the three circuits, plus 12 guests. The venue is the Heritage Golf Club, shown in the picture.
