Robert Allenby’s former caddie Mick Middlemo, whom the golfer slapped and ejected midway through the first round of the Canadian Open days ago, has reopened hostilities by stating that he now doubts his former boss’ account of his alleged kidnapping in Hawaii on January 19.
Middlemo claims that prior to the altercation that ended their working relationship he had defended Allenby “tooth and nail” when the golfer claimed he had been drugged, kidnapped, beaten and robbed.
The veteran caddie said that following that bizarre incident in Hawaii he told the media the version Allenby had told him, but now suspects that the Australian golfer drank to excess, fell and injured his face after having had a few glasses of wine and shots of tequila in a bar.
“Do I believe he was assaulted, beaten and robbed? No, I don’t. That’s the story I told because that’s the story he told me to tell, because I wasn’t there,” Middlemo told the Daily Telegraph.
“Do I think he just fell and hit his head? Honestly, yes… I think he fell and someone grabbed his wallet and had a great time with his credit card.”
Allenby, however, sticks to his story, claiming this week that he was beaten in Hawaii, but added that he may have gotten some details of that night mixed up.
A man was accused of using the golfer’s credit card, but police found no evidence that he was kidnapped and beaten.
Middlemo, speaking of the incident in Canada that ultimately ended in his dismissal, emphasized Allemby’s bad behavior at tournaments, and not only with him: “The way he talks to people on the golf course is mind-boggling, to the marshalls, to the volunteers…”.
