Tiger Woods could return to competition this summer

Tiger Woods is well recovered, is starting to practice and could be back in competition this summer, according to statements made to espn.com by the player’s agent, Mark Steinberg. Woods has not played since he pinched a nerve in his lower back on March 31 and was forced to undergo surgery and miss the Augusta Masters for the first time in his 20-year career.

“Every day that goes by he’s doing a little bit more, he’s already practicing a little bit of putting and chipping, and the doctors and trainers are happy with how he’s doing right now,” Steinberg said.

Woods, who won the last of his 14 majors in 2008 (the U.S. Open), is unlikely to be in top form for the upcoming U.S. Open on June 12 at Pinehurst, North Carolina.

The third major, the British Open, will be played on July 17 at Hoylake. The Merseyside links was the venue where Tiger won the last of his three claret jugs, in 2006.

The world number one is only surpassed in number of victories in majors by Jack Nicklaus, with 18. In third place is Walter Hagen, with 11 wins.
