Tom Lewis, European Tour Rookie of the Year

The Englishman Tom Lewis has been elected Rookie of the Year of the European Tour 2011. The 20-year-old Briton follows in the footsteps of Nick Faldo, the most famous figure of his club and who won the award 34 years ago, and gets recognition for his great campaign, which included his first victory on the Tour, in the Portugal Masters, which was his third tournament as a professional. In addition, the young English player signed, with 65 strokes, the lowest round by an amateur in the history of the British Open.

“I very much appreciate this honor. It certainly reflects what has been an amazing year. I think my dad will be more excited about this than my first win on the circuit in October. I’m very proud and feel very fortunate because there were other strong contenders for this award who will play consistently all year,” Lewis said. The Welwyn Garden City man beat Denmark’s Thorbjoern Olesen and Scotland’s Scott Jamieson to become the 22nd English player to be recognized with this award, succeeding Italy’s Matteo Manassero.
