A Boston college student has refused to collect a $10,000 prize for making a hole-in-one in order to play in the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) championships.
Brian Butler, a junior from West Hartford, Connecticut, was trying to qualify for the Benrus Open in Rhode Island on May 18 when he holed a one-putt on the 18th hole.
“Ten thousand dollars is obviously a great deal of money, but being a part of the BC golf team is something I love, and I wasn’t willing to give up,” Butler said.
The youngster advanced to the next qualifying round, to be played on June 18, and should he then manage to make another hole-in-one in the final round he would win a million dollars as prize money.
“With the small chance of getting another hole-in-one, I’m sure my decision would be different,” Butler said. Then I’d really miss out on a chance to be chosen for the NCAA college championships.
The Benrus Open is a par 3 tournament at The Preserve course in Boulder Hills, Wyoming. The competition brings together professional and amateur players.
