Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Phil Mickelson are, in that order, the favorites to win the US Open according to the bettors of a well-known American betting website. The world number one tops the list, which means that if he wins, those who bet on him will win seven dollars for every dollar wagered (7/1).
Spieth, winner of the first Grande of the season, is second in the bettors’ preferences, at 8/1, and the third place in this peculiar ranking goes to the Golden Lefty, although already at a considerable distance from the two mentioned in terms of profits for the bettors: if Mickelson wins at Chambers Bay (Whasington), they would win sixteen dollars for every dollar risked.
With a winning ratio of 18/1, he is followed by Dustin Johnson, Justin Rose and Rickie Fowler in the bettors’ preferences.
A Sergio Garcia victory would pay 33/1, the same as if Jason Day, Jim Furyk or Jimmy Walker won.
The defending champion, German Martin Kaymer, is paid 40 to 1. Tiger Woods is no longer the infallible player of yesteryear and his hypothetical victory would mean 50/1 winnings for those who bet on him.
McIlroy, despite being the favorite to win at Chambers Bay, a links course that in theory is more favorable for Europeans, is not going through a good moment. That slump has been starkly evidenced by his two consecutive failures in his latest European Tour appearances, as he was unable to make the cut at the BMW PGA Championship at Werthwoth and the Irish Open in the last two weeks of May.
