The morbidity is served: Tiger Woods and his former caddie Steve Williams will be in the same group on the opening day of the Presidents Cup, which will be the first time they will face each other in a tournament since the former number one fired him last July. The tournament begins tomorrow at Royal Melbourne, Australia. Williams and Woods held “peace” talks at the Australian Open last week following controversial racially tinged comments by the caddie, who referred to Woods as a “black asshole” at an event in China.
Williams, now Adam Scott’s caddie, later apologized for the comments. Scott, who has been paired in the tournament with KJ Choi, will face Americans Woods and Steve Stricker.
Presidents Cup international team captain Greg Norman, whose U.S. team counterpart is Fred Couples, said there was no intentionality on the part of the organization in setting up the match between Woods and Williams, which was drawn by lot.
However, the reunion between Tiger and his former caddy will guarantee the interest of the whole world.
“It’s very good for the tournament,” Norman acknowledged.
